2) send me a letter or an e-mail containing your personal data (the same data requested in the "normal" registration form).
Substitute 1.7.0 can also be included, without my previous permission, without changes and with this "Read Me", in all CD-ROM or disk shareware collections and in all CD-ROM or Disk magazines (anyway an e-mail or a notice will be welcome, as well as a copy of the magazine or media :-).

The unregistered version.
The unregistered version of Substitute is fully operational, but will always show its "about" box when you open it. When you register Substitute the irritating "about" box doesn't appear and the "unregistered" notice will be replaced by the registration information.
Notice: soon after registering, you will receive the serial number via e-mail.
Note for old Substitute users.
Substitute was, principally, a powerful MiniFinder. The new Mac OS 8 has the ability to build useful Emergency Diskettes so the Substitute's MiniFinder feature becomes obsolete.
Now Substitute is a General Utility or rather a work on progress: new features may appear, or disappear, version by version. Features may migrate towards other applications of mine or may come from other ones. If you need a MiniFinder, don't try to use this version of Substitute, use instead Substitute 1.6.0 or Mac OS 8's MiniFinder or, better, MiniSubstitute 1.7.0, a freeware MiniFinder version of Substitute.
Overview.
Main Window.
The Substitute main window shows, continuously, infos about the foreground application: the name (in the window title), the Type and the Creator, the Desktop Icon, the CPU time (in seconds) accumulated, the memory allocated and the application free memory .
Also the Substitute main window shows the current date and time.
Note: the "memory allocated" is the real memory allocated by System to the application.
Menu File.
from this menu you can launch all the Applications and Desk Accessories you want.
In addition you can launch files having type: APPC, appe, adrp, APPD. You may also restart/launch Finder-At Ease if you've closed them by using Substitute or else another utility.
Substitute allows you to launch At Ease even if your Mac has started with the Finder, a caveat: don't select users having Finder access or else you will have a hellish restart/shutdown!!!! Always select users having access only to At Ease panel.
Menu Substitute.
from this menu by selecting "Add Item..." you can add items of type of above (Finder-At Ease also), and launch them from the sub menu "Items".
You can remove items from list through "Remove Item..."
Note: Substitute assigns a shortcut to the first ten item you add to the sub menu "Items".
Menu Special.
The menu Item 'Copy…' allows you to copy files and folders. Substitute can perform this task in background. A progress window informs you about the copy state.
'Move…' moves files and folders inside the same disk.
'Move to Trash…': moves files and folders to trash.
Menu General.
Through General menu you may:
1) Rebuild the Desktop Database of disks.
Be careful: use this feature with prudence and only if really necessary: is more easy, simple and free from problems, rebuilding desktop at startup, holding down command+option keys.
2) Unmount and Eject disks.
3) Know all available keyboard layouts. To change the current layout, type command-option-space.
4) Temporarily change the default application font.
5) Change the sound level.
6) Change the monitor depth.
7) Compact the System Heap.
8) Remove the unneeded code from FAT item. USEFUL!!!! Substitute allows you to choose the code type to remove (68k or PPC) from selected items. If you select disks or folders, Substitute shows a progress bar, while it scans them, searching for unneeded code.
9) Use TransStyle. What's TransStyle? read, please.
Many applications and documents have 'styl' resources inside them.
If you're running a non-Roman 2-byte script system (Japanese, Korean, Chinese...), and if your machine is not really fast, the first text drawing can be rather slow, when you open a file compiled under a Roman 1-byte script system . This is because your System should translate the style of text, before showing it.
To dramatically increase the text drawing speed, you should optimize your files with TranStyle before using it. TranStyle has several option to translate styles:
it can change any style of 'styl' resource to TransStyle default (font geneva, size 9, style plain, color black), or accordingly your preferences.
Available options:
Font -> default, don'change, any font you've installed,
Size -> default, don'change, 12 pt,
Style-> default, don'change, change any non plain text to italic,
Color-> default, don'change, change any colored text to underline,
also TranStyle can zap all 'styl' resources of file opened.
TransStyle was a stand-alone application but, to reduce the number of circulating application of mine, I've merged it into Substitute.
10) Gather info about files, folders and disks.
Tips: if you want to gather informations about alias instead of original, make sure to select the alias through the button at the bottom of Substitute "Get File…" dialog.
Menu Process.
Through Process menu you may:
1) View all running processes and switch to foreground the process you want (just like the Finder's Application menu).
2) Close the process you want.
3) Gather infos about the process you want.
4) Close all processes.
5) Restart or shutdown your Macintosh.
